Marina Diamandis aka Marina and the Diamonds has returned as Electra Heart, the blond bombshell whom we got the first taste of with ballad Fear & Loathing. The second teaser from Marina’s upcoming sophomore release comes with epic single Radioactive.
At first listen the mainstream pop elements of the Stargate + DJ Chuckie produced track are a bit overwhelming, especially for fans dying to hear the signature quirky tunes on her debut album, The Family Jewels. After a few views of the carefree video – we’re sold. Lyrically, Marina keeps with the theme of her love/hate ‘obsession’ with American culture. Sonically, she stands in front of the super-sized pop production, not behind it. Her character still shines through, a testament to her drive and perserverance in the industry. She challenged herself and it paid off.
Did you know she once auditioned for music exec’s as a man? Read more about how she got her start in our interview with Marina last year here.
If Stargate aren’t mainstream enough for you, Marina is said to be working with Dr. Luke, Greg Kurstin, Diplo, Guy Sigsworth and more on the upcoming album. Now, it’s your turn. Leave your comments below!
If you sign up for Marina’s newsletter, you’ll receive a free download of the acoustic version of Radioactive which you can also listen to below!
If you are looking for a dark + broody remix of Obsessions (the track that started it all!) by Marina and the Diamonds give this slightly mysterious oOoOO rework a listen.
It’s actually really sexy + a bit sad. Love the slowed down vocal, it reminds me of a dubbed out version of that Skream remix of In For The Kill. If you haven’t given her debut The Family Jewels a listen yet – it’s a must! - Matt
Marina & The Diamonds is (yes, it’s just her!) one of my favorite breakout acts of 2009. I still don’t think she’s getting the mainstream coverage she deserves. Her debut album The Family Jewels is chock full of radio-friendly pop songs with a unique twist to them. I could easily hear Hollywood or Oh No! alongside any majorly overplayed pop song. Let’s get some diversity to radio dammit!
But I digress. Today we’ve got a great remix of current single I Am Not A Robot done by Clock Opera. They change up the vocals a bit and add in a beat, not too bad but the Penguin Prison mix will always be my favorite. – Matt
Monday night Matt & I attended the Marina & the Diamonds show at LPR. I’ve been playing the crap out of Marina’s debut release The Family Jewels in recent days and with every listen it gets better. I was excited that Marina delivered in person last night, her voice is just a powerful live as it is on record and the girl has definite stage presence! I do not know much about Marina, but watching her I felt she was probably classical trained, she worked the stage belting out almost every number from her record and even took to the piano for a couple of numbers. She had fun with the crowd who were wild for her and told us how excited she was to be playing New York and that we were much better crowd than Londoners! haha! Marina heads to SXSW next so if you’re going be sure to check out one of her sets!
“This is who I was. Hollywood infected my brain and I really valued the wrong things in life, but I changed dramatically. This obsession with celebrity culture is really unhealthy. I don’t want to live my life like that, and I don’t want to be a typical pop star…” – Marina via BBC News
The release of Marina and The Diamonds debut album is right around the corner. On February 22nd, The Family Jewels will be released. *that sounds so sexual!*
Here is a great reworked orchestral version with Gonzales. Video below. Abba and Queen meet, have a baby and give her a whole lotta hair spray! Performance video with the two below. - Matt
All the bloggers and press alike go crazy when something new from Marina & The Diamonds is released, and with due justice. She’s got great tunes, my favorites being I Am Not a Robot and the current single Hollywood. While we eagerly wait for the full length debut, enjoy The Juan MacLean‘s nu-disco/DFA inspired take on the track. Pump up the BPM + throw those orchestral stabs in – it’s time to dance!
Marina & The Diamonds is ‘obsessed by the mess that’s America’ as she blasts through pop-stars while looking for the ‘golden light’ in Hollywood. It’s the first single from debut The Family Jewels which will be released in February. Fenech-Soler put the finishing touches on their up-beat dance remix which i’m enjoying tonight. She’s caused a lot of blog buzz this past year so it’ll be great to hear a proper full length. Pump up this mix to hold you over! - Matt
